The legal profession has long been striving to promote and maintain diversity in the workplace, particularly in positions of controlling leadership. Despite this, white and male attorneys still make up the majority of lawyers in the United States. However, the ABA National Lawyer Population Survey (ABA Survey) has revealed that the percentage of female lawyers has increased by 5% over the past decade. Illinois is one of the states leading the way when it comes to the number of attorneys practicing in the state, ranking fifth overall. Additionally, other states such as North Carolina, Georgia, Texas and Utah have seen a 20% increase in active attorneys over the past decade. A survey of 641 law firms across the country revealed that 865 lawyers claim to have disabilities, representing 1.22% of the lawyers in those offices.
This indicates that while male lawyers still outnumber female lawyers, there is a growing trend towards greater diversity in the legal profession.
